Every year, hundreds of businesses, organisations, schools, community groups and individuals take part in National Vegetarian Week and make it a huge success.
Once again, we're giving a special Local Hero Award to those we think have made an exceptional effort to celebrate the Week. The winners in each category below will receive a special trophy and the right to boast about their brilliant achievement!
When the Week finished our panel of judges pored through the entries that were submitted on the 'What’s Happening' page and chose winners for:
- Local Organisation Hero
- Local School Hero
- Local Community Group Hero
Local Community Group Hero 2013
Joint winners: Easi4Communities/The Bridge and Daventry Area Vegetarians and Vegans
EASI4Communities and The Bridge caught our eye with their commitment and dedication to highlighting National Vegetarian Week. They held a sampling session with lots of different vegetarian and vegan food while their Russian chef Boris committed to eat only vegetarian food during the month of May, running the in-house cafe as a meat-free facility for the Week.
"NVW was a great success for us and our members and we look forward to experimienting with more vegetarian options in the future" - Ian Hanton, EASI4Communities and The Bridge.
Daventry Area Vegetarians and Vegans, a Vegetarian Society local group, used National Vegetarian Week to host an open day and get the word out about a healthy and tasty meat-free lifestyle. As well the successful open day, Chris and the members also ran information stalls at two local libraries and a college, talking to others there and handing out free information and recipes.
Local Organisation Hero 2013
Joint winners: Drake & Morgan and Whiting & Hammond
London-based bar and restaurant group Drake & Morgan celebrated National Vegetarian Week with a special cocktail menu where vegetables took centre stage. With fresh ingredients like celery, beetroot and carrot, their vege-tipples ran exclusively during NVW. The four bars taking part also ran a competition on Twitter, asking followers to tell them their favourite veggie dish. The best suggestion was added to the menu and the winner was invited to eat it as part of a complimentary 3-course meal with wine.
"We are thrilled to have won a Local Hero Award for our contribution to National Vegetarian Week. It highlights our commitment to not only providing innovative and exciting new cocktails but also to offering a menu that suits a wide range of dietary requirements" - Lisa Yearwood, Head of Marketing at Drake & Morgan
Whiting & Hammond, a family run company comprising of independently managed pubs and restaurants across the South East, also went the extra mile during National Vegetarian Week 2013. Several of their pubs launched stunning special vegetarian menus just for the Week with a huge variety of carefully thought out dishes and flavours.
"We are really pleased to be presented with this award, our chefs love to be creative with their menus and they fabulously rose to the challenge of putting together a vegetarian menu leaving us with some great ideas for dishes to use in the future" - Brian Whiting
Local School Hero 2013
Winner: Dogsthorpe Junior School
Staff and students at Dogsthorpe Junior School in Peterborough really embraced NVW 2013, with special activities and food diaries for the students and a shared vegetarian staff meal too. The school also used Vegetarian Society resources to look at where food comes and to discuss different foods. Check back soon for a photo of their award presentation and a quote!
We must also give a special mention to Grace Day Nursery in Coventry for an excellent week of fun and activities, including free food samples, the giving out of healthy food bags for parents containing a vegetarian recipe and the ingredients to make it and more. Well done!
